Fairfax retinal exam

Here at The Retina Group of Washington, a Fairfax retinal exam is one of the most important services we have to offer. A retinal examination can be incredibly telling about your overall eye health and vision quality. A retinal examination can also be referred to as an ophthalmoscopy or funduscopy. The purpose of a Fairfax retinal exam is so the experts here at The Retina Group of Washington can see and assess the health of the back part of your eye, which includes your retina (the light sensitive tissue which contains the cells necessary to form your visual images), your optic disk, and the layer of blood vessels that keep the retina functioning with their nourishment, which is known as the choroid. In many cases, we will need to dilate your eyes in order to most effectively evaluate these structures in your eye during a Fairfax retinal exam. What this means is that we will administer special eye drops that keep your pupil wide for an extended amount of time, even when light is shined into the eye. The Fairfax retinal exam itself is usually quite quick—often no longer than ten minutes, but the effects of having your eyes dilated can last longer, so it is important to plan ahead about how you will get home from the exam since driving could be dangerous.

Early Surgical Intervention for Spontaneous Vitreous Hemorrhage

Dr. Melamud published a paper examining the role of early surgical intervention in patients presenting with spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage that obscured the ability of the examining physician to see and evaluate the retina.  The results of study demonstrated that 61 % of these patients had underlying retinal tears or detachments.  In addition the study highlighted the benefits of early vitrectomy surgery.  Patients undergoing surgery within one week of presentation had a lower rate of macula off retinal detachment.  The study was published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, a prestigious peer-reviewed periodical.
